River Avon
The Swineford stretch of the River Avon
Starts at Swineford Mill and extends downstream (right bank) for three fields (about a mile) to the cycle track bridge, at which point The Crane begins.
There are some great features along this section of the Avon, attracting good numbers of Pike, Chub, Carp and Bream, plus the usual array of Roach, Dace and Hybrids and the odd Tench and Barbel.
Access to the Swineford stretch is via the kissing gate opposite the Swan Inn at Swineford. Limited parking is available near the gate.
The Crane is a two-mile stretch of the River Avon
commencing at the lower end of the Swineford water (at the cycle track bridge) and continuing for five fields downstream (right bank) to the cattle grid at Keynsham.
The first mile upstream from Keynsham is characterised by moored barges on the far bank. Above peg 75 the house boats give way to the grounds of Avon Valley Country Park. Alders provide great cover for large Carp, Chub and Pike. Some great Bream and Roach catches can also be made here.
Access to the The Crane at Keynsham is via the lane that runs alongside the car breakers yard. There is ample parking near Portavon Marina and the Lock Keeper Inn.
The Jack White's stretch of the River Avon
commences below the lock gates at Keynsham and runs opposite the former Cadbury factory downstream to Willsbridge Brook.
The River Avon becomes tidal below Keynsham weir, with high spring tides causing the river to back up, increasing the depth by as much as 8ft during high spring tides. Alder and Willow offer near and far bank cover.
Some very large Carp can be found in this stretch, along with good numbers of Bream, Chub, Pike and Roach. One or two large Barbel are also present. Access is via the public footpath by the Lock Keeper pub. Ample parking can be found near the marina.
